The DTP vaccine (also known as Td/IPV) protects against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. These are serious diseases that can be life-threatening.

Diphtheria is a serious disease that usually begins with a sore throat. It can quickly cause breathing problems or affect the skin. It can also damage the heart and nervous system, and in severe cases, can kill. Diphtheria is passed from person to person through close contact.

Tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system that can lead to muscle spasms and breathing problems. It’s caused by germs found in soil and manure getting into the body through open cuts or burns. It cannot be passed from person to person.

Polio is a caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It can cause permanent paralysis of muscles. If it affects the chest muscles or the brain, polio can kill. The virus is usually spread from person to person or by swallowing contaminated food or water.
